Bernice Chua

BERNICE CHUA began learning the piano at the age of 4 with Marie Cull and obtained her music diploma at the age of 13. In 2016, she began studying under the tutelage of Dr Bernadette Harvey. Bernice auditioned at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg in June 2018 where she was accepted as a student in the Pre-College Piano program. The following year she undertook the entrance examination for the Bachelor Piano Performance program in which she recently graduated in June 2023 under Professor Andreas Weber. Following her graduation, Bernice was accepted into two Master programs at the Mozarteum University: Solo Piano Performance and Chamber Music. She will commence both in October 2023 under Professor Jacques Rouvier and Professor Connie Shih. As a chamber musician, Bernice has also studied under Leonhard Roczek from the Minetti Quartet, Cibrán Sierra Vázquez from Cuarteto Quiroga, Klara Flieder, Matthias Bartolomey, and Luz Leskowitz. 

Bernice has won various scholarships from the ANU School of Music, Canberra Girls Grammar School and the Wesley Music Centre. In 2015, Bernice was selected to take part in the Beethoven series as part of the Canberra International Music Festival, won the ArtSound Young Virtuoso of the Year Award and represented the Australian Capital Territory as a finalist at the Australian National Young Virtuoso Award. In 2022, she was a prize winner in the WPTA Spain International Piano Competition, Young Artists Category and has also won many places from competitions across Australia including the Australian National Eisteddfod, Sydney Eisteddfod and Wollongong Eisteddfod. Bernice has taken masterclasses with international artists including Amandine Savary, Eva Pobłocka, Andreas Weber, Benedicte Palko, Jacques Rouvier, Óscar Martín, and Michał Białk, and has performed across Australia, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain.

As a teacher, Bernice has been teaching for over 8 years. She has taught students of all ages, ranging from 3 years old, to 70 years old. She primarily teachers piano with an European classical style, as well as theory, predominantly following the AMEB syllabus. As an Australian, Bernice has had many students sit AMEB piano and theory exams, in which all of them have received either a Distinction or High Distinction.
