Legacy of Guitar

Affirming the guitar's vital role in the past and future of classical music.

The youngest of Curtis’ applied music departments, the guitar program was inaugurated in 2010 and immediately established itself as a leading force in the training of the next generation of classical guitarists.

  • “I feel that the guitar is in a golden age. The core of young people that play well is much larger today. The future of the guitar is in good hands.”

    — Jason Vieaux

The Guitar department’s creation was made possible through the visionary support of Curtis Trustee Nina Baroness von Maltzahn, her husband Baron Lothar von Maltzahn, and Board Chairman H.F. “Gerry” Lenfest. From its inception, the program has been guided by illustrious guitarists David Starobin and Jason Vieaux.

Under the guidance of these two esteemed artists, Curtis’ guitar students immerse themselves in a comprehensive curriculum, exploring solo and ensemble repertoire with a particular emphasis on contemporary works. Both Starobin and Vieaux have been instrumental in expanding the contemporary classical guitar repertoire through their collaborations with composers. Starobin is the dedicatee of over 350 works, and Vieaux has performed premieres by numerous established and emerging composers. All guitar students at Curtis work with both faculty members, benefiting from their expertise and commitment to new music.

The presence of guitar at Curtis has not only broadened the school’s musical offerings but also affirmed the instrument’s vital role in the past and future of classical music.
