Master of Music
Details and Requirements
The Curtis Master of Music degree prepares artists to achieve the highest level of professional excellence in performance and creative practice, while fostering the development of an authentic and individual artistic voice.
The Master of Music degree requires a minimum of 40 semester hours and a two-year minimum residential commitment.
Details
Students gain advanced knowledge of musical styles and performance traditions, complemented by a sophisticated understanding of music’s broader historical, philosophical, cultural, and social contexts. Students critically engage with contemporary professional perspectives, examining the role of the musician in society and formulating strategies for sustainable engagement with emerging professional pathways. Throughout their studies, students refine their leadership skills, strengthen intercultural awareness, and learn to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, ensuring their artistry resonates across local, national and global stages.
Reflecting the individualized and distinctive nature of the program, students demonstrate intellectual rigor by planning, researching, and delivering an extended capstone project.
The program combines intensive, performance-based training with academic coursework and reflective independent study. Students engage in weekly lessons, studio and master classes, chamber music, orchestra, opera, and recital performances, developing their artistry within a rigorous professional environment. Academic classes include the Graduate Seminar, Research Methods, Entrepreneurship in Art and Action, Electives and the Capstone Project.
Capstone Project
The capstone project provides students with the opportunity to integrate and demonstrate their artistic, scholarly, and professional development. Each student will select one (1) of four (4) pathways: Lecture Recital, Research Paper, Individual Design, or Community Artist Project. While each option differs in format and emphasis, all require rigorous engagement, originality of thought, and critical reflection. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, students design, refine and implement a project that promotes new learning, adds original perspective to the field and hones academic and artistic skills in a way that further develops their artistic identity. Students will identify a proposed topic in their project proposal and subsequently refine it under the supervision of their assigned mentor. Students will demonstrate, where appropriate, the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, to work independently and collaboratively, and to engage responsibly with cultural and professional contexts.
